If you live in Michigan & have an appreciation for music you most likely know that all of these artists are either from Michigan or were produced here at one point. We look at these names- nostalgia rises from the lettering- some of these artists bring about memories of the good days. days from when we were younger. For some they bring memories from when we were anxious for the next release, memories of a frightening culture shock, memories of dancing & a shift in traditional household roles. For others we are awakened by memories of our parents & grandparents listening to the artists. We would dance around and watch with big eyes as our parent's faces would come alive with memories of better times - stories & nostalgia wafting. So often we hear, "what a classic".
Detroit has been shaped and directed and controlled by many elements throughout its existence. Many of these things aren't good, morally, or for our image as a city. Many things bring about tragic memories of worse times- disgusting times in our state's history. But of all of these things, music is the one thing that has never stopped actively changing, evolving, and moving forward in a positive light. We've had our slow moments, our failures, & our set backs- but Detroit artists- Michigan artists- we have a real, raw, creative element that is breathtaking & inspirational beyond all measure. I cannot say that I approve of or even like a lot of music that has come out of Detroit- but man, it's got soul, power, & a story.
Detroit has long been a city that is filled with entertainment & music- but it really came alive in 1959 when Berry Gordy started Mowtown Records. It reshaped Detroit's music scene, producing chart topping artists like The Jackson 5, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, & The Supremes- just to name a few. That reinvention of music culture right there paved the way for musicians all over Michigan to come up with fresh, new ideas, & produce them right in their own backyard. Their dreams weren't so far away anymore.- not so out of reach. Later on down the line, Michigan released artists such as the great Madonna, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, and so on. More recently we have released into the industry, Mike Posner, Eminem, Kid Rock, & up and coming, NF & Fleurie. All of these artists, although all from different time periods, cities, & genres, have one thing in common: they're all from Michigan.
The Detroit Project is working hard to bring together artists all across the state of Michigan. We want to reinvent how music is made and done in Detroit. Let's stand up together as musicians to refine and reunite Detroit's music business & show the world that Michigan has what it takes & that Detroit is on the uprise, from music, to business, to culture reform.
As artists we have the power in creativity and numbers- will you join us?
Submit your work today & become a part of the Detroit Project.

"what a classic".
